Differentiation - Making it Work

 Provide Productive Struggle while Differentiating

Differentiate using not only similar abiltities or heterogeneous groups but make it sustainable for you. Plan open-ended activities so learners are engaged in choosing the pathway that works best for them.

KISS - Keep It Simple Strategies
  1. Identify your desired results.
  2. How will students show mastery?
  3. Create a menu of choices.
    • Math (provide manipulatives, number lines, grid paper, calculators)
    • Literacy (alternative story endings, journaling, character development, alternate interpretations)
  4. Stations / Learning Centers (limit time at each station to a maximum of 20-30 minutes)
    • Incorporate online quizzes or games for practice (Kahoot, Quizalize - data collection)
    • Peer Feedback and Revision
    • Teacher Table for enrichment, remediation, or redo work. (allow students to volunteer for this station when they recognize they need help)
    • Students provide a self-reflection of their work
    • Students complete a Google Form, where they submit a photo of what they had worked on, along with a brief explanation of how they connected this to the overall concept or theme.
    • Provide a heterousgeneous group station where students work together on a common task. You may need to provide prompts and examples on how to empathetically work together.
  5. Provide detailed instructions for each Learning Center
  6. Provide rubrics and templates
  7. Know the maximum number of students at each Learning Center
  8. Virtual Learning Centers are okay!
